Procedure text is text that contains commands or steps in doing something.
Text Procedure Features :
- Using simple present tenses
- Using the imperative sentence.
Example; add two spoons, cook with low heat.
- Using action verbs. Examples; add, put, turn.
- Using numbering. Examples; first, second, third.
- Using conjunctions. Example; next, then, while.
- Using adverbs to clarify the stages passed. Examples; correctly, carefully, slowly.
Types of Procedure Text :
• Procedure text that describes how to operate/use something.
For example; how to use a camera.
• Procedure text that provides instructions for carrying out certain activities.
For example; how to play guitar.
• Procedure text related to tips for living life.
For example; how to make yourself happy.
Structure Procedure Text :
1. Goal/Aim : contains the intent and purpose of the related procedure text.
2. Materials : contains the materials needed to perform the steps of a procedure text.
3. Steps : a list of sequential steps to complete the procedure text stages.
4. Result : the result of the steps that have been carried out.
Language Features of Procedure Text :
1. Simple present tense :
Procedure Text must be written using Simple Present Tense, Squad.
2. Imperative Sentences : Examples; are heat, stir, mix.
3. Connectives :
Used as a liaison between one activity and another. For example ; firstly, secondly, then, after that.
4. Adverbs :
Used to provide time information, such as: in 10 minutes, for 1 hour. In addition, it can also be used to give an explanation of how.
For example; slowly, thoroughly, well.
Example : How To Make Brownies :
- Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F (160°C fan forced).
- pray a 20cm/8" square tin with oil and line with baking/parchment paper with overhang (Note 2).
-Place butter and chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl, microwave in 30 second bursts until melted. Stir until smooth.
- Add sugar and vanilla, mix, then add eggs and mix well until smooth and molten.
- Add flour, cocoa and salt and stir until smooth. Stir in chopped chocolate, pour into pan.
- Bake 24 minutes for really gooey in the centre, 28 minutes for fudgey but still very moist, 32 minutes for moist fudge-cake-like.
- If you didn't use the extra chocolate for stirring in, reduce cook time by 2 minutes.
- Rest for 10 minutes before lifting out of the pan. Allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before cutting. Store in an airtight container for 4 days or freeze for 3 months.
